Technology in Teaching Mathematics:
Finding the area of a parallelogram by breaking it down into a rectangle using Geogebra
In today's society it is very important to be technologically advanced, especially when it comes to working with students. Technology has grown tremendously in the classroom and Geogebra provides teachers with an opportunity to use technology and math together. Geogebra is a free program that is downloadable and easy to use. The way I chose to use Geogebra was to help students understand the relationship between the area of a parallelogram and a square. First I had them create a square by using what they know about it: 2 sets of parallel lines that intersect and form 4 right angles. Then, they found the area and marked it on the page. They were able to create a parallelogram located on the same horizontal parallels as the square. After doing so they calculate the area for the parallelogram and can find the relationship between the area of a parallelogram and the area of a square. By being able to visualize and manipulate the objects, the students will develop a better idea of the relationship between the two areas. Below is an example of the worksheet I would provide the students with in order to guide them through the lesson.
